Rekenreks

During math this week I have introduced a new math tool - the Rekenrek. This tool is used to help students subitize, practice counting on, and strengthen overall number sense. The tool has been quite popular!

Share Time

If you have ever wondered what first graders share about at their weekly share time here are some recent topics: back molars coming in, a delicious dinner of pork chops, Halloween costumes, recently earned soccer medals, siblings birthday parties, and so much more! Share time is awesome!

Story Elements

This week we have started to focus our read aloud time on story elements. We are using some fun Halloween books to guide our conversations about character, setting, problem, and solution.

Fun Friday - Math Game Day

On Fridays we try to have math game day. This is a time when students can choose which math game they want to play to reinforce skills previously taught. Choice is an important factor in motivation and engagement for students.

Lots of Learning!

Students using whisper phones while they read. These tools help students hear themselves while reading (important for self-monitoring and correcting) without hearing each word the reader next to them says.

We have been working hard on combinations of 10. The photos show students trying different ways to organize their thinking into a chart.

Visit from Community Helpers

This afternoon we were fortunate enough to have members from Colchester Rescue come to UMS to tell us about their job. Thank you Becky and John!

Making 10

One of the big concepts in first grade math is that the number 10 can be composed by different pairs of numbers. Yesterday and today we played games to practice this.

Vision and Hearing Screening

Today Nurse Kelly checked our eyes and ears. If you do not hear from her assume all is well. If she has any concerns about a child’s hearing or vision she will reach out to you at home.
