New Writing Genre
Today we began to scratch the surface of our new writing genre 'persuasive writing'. Within this unit students will explore the differences between facts and opinions. They will also learn how to provide evidence that supports their opinions. This is usually a popular time in writing due to the fact that six and seven year old students have LOTS of opinions! Today's introduction used the book, Duck! Rabbit! Boys and girls had to decide is the illustrator drawing a duck or a rabbit?

Reminder!
I'm looking forward to seeing many of you on either Monday or Tuesday for Parent/Teacher conferences! Enjoy your weekend. :)
'Flock'ing to First Grade
Students once again impressed me with their beautiful and fun artwork. We used directions found on the site Deep Space Sparkle to get started and from there it was just imagination.

"Mrs. Blend"
Yesterday during word study the first graders were quite surprised to have a visit from Mrs. Blend. This special word chef magically put letters together (fl, gl, cl, sl). One never know when she might return.

States of Matter Song
I wish that I could take credit for writing this catchy and informative song, but I found it on Pinterest with the original post by MsK. and her class of kindergartners.

Liquids Experiment
Today we had a 'race' between three liquids. We were testing the viscosity of the liquids. You will see from the volume the class was quite excited!

Fiddlesticks!
Fiddlesticks is a game that can be played to practice a variety of skills. This morning we played to practice our Fry sight words. The game is never really over. Students simply keep pulling sticks, reading the word, and then checking with the group to see if they read it correctly. When the stick with a red dot is pulled that student says 'fiddlesticks' and returns their sticks to the cup. Simple yet fun!

Properties of Solids
The video below was taken today during our science time. Students used a set of solid objects to build and create anything they wanted. The goal was to share their creations at the end with a partner and be able to use some of our new vocabulary (i.e. properties, flexible, rigid, hard, soft) to explain what they built. Watching them build today was the best part of my day!

Parent/Teacher Conference Sign-Up
We are now using an online service for parent conference sign-ups. It is the same company Malletts Bay and Colchester Middle School use. To sign-up for a conference, click on the link below. There is also a link on the UMS website. Conferences are November 23rd & 24th.
Remember, you are only allowed to schedule one slot per child. So, you will need to coordinate schedules with your spouse and/or the child’s other parent. If you do not have access to a computer, please call Mrs. Phillips to schedule your time. 264-5959
Two other things to remember when scheduling: There is no space between your child’s first and last name (ex. JohnSmith) and you need to use a foreslash when separating the numbers in the birthdate (ex. 01/02/2011).
