Bike Trip Reminders

Tomorrow (Thursday, May 31st) is our first grade bike trip.  Students will need plenty of water, sunscreen, a bagged lunch, their bike and helmet.  If you are chaperoning and would prefer to meet us at Airport Park with your bikes that is fine!  We are still looking for a few volunteers to help load extra bikes into their vehicles.  Let's hope the beautiful weather continues.

The study of chicks always proves to be one of the most memorable events in first grade and this year was no different! It is amazing when science can be this hands on. I loved watching and listening as students shared their new knowledge with friends, family, and other teachers in the building. I hope this video makes you smile as much as I did.

New Life - A Chick Hatching

As I am sure you have heard by now...the hatch has begun!!!  Today was an incredibly busy, exciting, and active day as we had our first three chicks hatch (around 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 2 p.m.).  The first graders are very excited to spend some time with our feathered friends for the remainder of this week.  Please enjoy this video (a special moment to actually capture the hatch...that doesn't always happen) and ignore Mrs. Hughes talking throughout.  I just love all of the comments you hear from kids, though!

Guidance and Bike Safety

Last week Mrs. McCleary finished her unit about personal safety.  Please click on this link to go to the guidance blog for detailed information about what was covered.

Also, Mrs. McCleary helped us out greatly today by coming in to discuss bike safety.  Students learned many 'rules of the road' as well as how to keep themselves safe by having the proper equipment.

Field Day T-Shirts

We will be decorating white t-shirts for students to wear at Field Day on June 6th. If possible, please send a clean white t-shirt for your child to decorate at school. I will keep these in the classroom after we decorate them and keep them for your child to change into before we leave for Airport Park on the morning of Field Day.

Please send the t-shirt (marked with your child's name on the inside tag/collar) by Tuesday, May 29th. Thank you!

Math, math, math

Students have been busy in all academic areas working on end of year assessments, but our math tasks seem to be the most time-consuming.  First grade boys and girls have been very patient working on a variety of activities each day as I continue to help those who are completing the assessment.  Good news...we finished!!!  

Final Reading Program Week

To all of my fabulous volunteers...First, let me say 'thank you'!  I don't know if I will ever again have as many fantastic volunteers as I had this year.  I appreciate the time and energy you gave!  I know the amount of reading my students did with you positively affected their reading ability!  It's hard to believe, but this will be our final week of reading program.  Again, THANK YOU!!!  We are so fortunate at UMS to have such supportive families!

The Eggs Have Arrived!

I'm sure that you've already heard, but in case you  haven't...the eggs have arrived!  We are now caring for 12 chick embryos.  Students have been asking since September when we would be hatching chicks and now that time has come!  The chicks need approximately 21 days to fully develop before they hatch.  Ask your child each night what new chick facts they've learned!

Pre-Vacation: Red Clover Afternoon

On the Thursday afternoon before vacation we celebrated literacy by having a 'Red Clover' afternoon.  We began our afternoon with some short skits performed by some very silly actors.  After each skit the students tried to guess what book they were acting out.

Four Winds: Camouflage

This afternoon we were lucky enough to have Mrs. Gamelin and Mr. Correll come in again to lead Four Winds.  Today's topic: camouflage.  I was extremely impressed with how much the first graders knew before we even started!  There are many different types of camouflage, but they all serve one purpose - to keep animals safe from their predators!
