Guest from the Flynn Theater

On Friday afternoon we were thrilled to host Susanna Olson from the Flynn Theater!  She spent about an hour in our classroom as a part of the Flynn's Companion Workshop series.  We had an opportunity to hear about how the performance will be run tomorrow, but we also had a chance to become actors ourselves.  The students did a wonderful job and we received a nice compliment from our guest before she left.  We are so excited to head to the Flynn Theater tomorrow! (As a side note:  All students must bring a bagged lunch from home for tomorrow).

'Cooking' with Letters

Unfortunately, (or fortunately for me) I wasn't able to get a picture of myself dressed today for 'cooking with letters'.  However, the class seemed very amused when I took on the role of Ms. Julia Child to blend letters together such as 'bl, fl, gl, and sl'.  This week we will be working on this skill during SWR.  Ask your child about today's 'guest' and see what they say! :)

Detailed Work

It is hard to believe, but these awesome first graders are getting pretty close to becoming second graders.  We've really been focusing on careful and detailed work.  The boys below were very proud of the detail they put into their illustrations...and they should be!

SWR (spelling, writing, and reading)

At this point in the year many of the skills that I will introduce in SWR do not have to be mastered, but certainly the more familiar students are with them the better their reading and writing will be.  Hopefully students showed you their 'magic e' wands that help turn short vowel sounds into long vowel sounds.  

St. Patrick's Day in Room 6

Yesterday was a busy and fun day in Room 6!  It started with some surprises from a leprechaun: green toilet water, green glitter marking his footsteps, a note on our board, and some misplaced spelling cards.  We had to focus quickly though because we led school meeting right at 8:45.  We taught the entire school an activity called 'pop see ko' and shared some of our learning about persuasive writing.  Our morning ended with making 'leprechaun pudding'.  Students were very surprised to see that when we added milk to our white powder it turned green and 'gold nuggets' appeared.  It was quite a day!

DARE

This afternoon we had our first of four visits from Officer Fontaine.  He will be joining us on Wednesday afternoons to discuss a variety of topics with the central theme being safety.  Today, we discussed 9-1-1.

Weather

Our current science unit of study is weather.  We are learning about each of the four components that make up the weather: cloud coverage, precipitation, wind, and temperature.  Before vacation we did an experiment that illustrated how clouds form (because matches were involved I didn't stop to take pictures of that one) and today we created a model that demonstrated rain.  Ask your son or daughter what they remember.  We are also in the process of scheduling Tom Messner from Channel 5 to come and speak with our classes about meteorology!
