How-To Writing

This week in writing we are focusing on procedural (‘how to’) writing. Yesterday, we all used the slide and wrote a piece together teaching others how to use the slide. Today, we blew bubbles outside and then came in to write about how to get the best bubbles. The wind really helped!!

Writing and Celebrations

We are working hard to fill our second Champband container to earn a sundae party. I haven’t told the class yet that they’ll have to write about it first. 😉

Today’s ‘Chick Celebration’ was a huge success! Now our feathered friends are headed back to UVM. Thank you to all who joined us!

Reminder

Just a couple of quick reminders...
1. If you have not yet returned the permission slip for June events please do so by June 1st.  The one permission slip includes three different events.
2. Please return the yellow BBQ form for our UMS Field Day as soon as possible.  The cafeteria needs to get an accurate count of how many people will be eating that day.

Thank you!

Outdoor Fun!

We all enjoyed a little fresh air today as we watched the chicks explore the great outdoors!

If you are wondering what a first grade classroom full of 22 truly engaged kids looks and sounds like watch this video!  The only thing I had to say was that we needed to be quiet if we wanted time to observe our new feathered friends.  They were amazing!

School Celebration

Bouncy Slide...need I say more?!

Illustrator Visit

We were so fortunate to have Song Nguyen visit our class today. She is the illustrator for the book ‘For Martin, Ben played’. The class asked some great questions about being an artist as well as the book. Before she left she gave every student a copy of the story! What a generous gift.

Bossy R Song

You have seen me post videos in the past that I use to help students learn/remember challenging concepts.  This video was our introduction to 'r' controlled vowels (or as we call it 'bossy r').

Candling the Eggs

Yesterday we were able to candle our eggs which was very exciting! Candling is a process where a bright light is placed directly on the egg which enables us to look through the shell (think x-ray or ultrasound). We discovered that 10 of our embryos are healthy and growing! This is great news as a 50% hatch rate is considered successful. We even saw some of the embryos moving which was very cool!

Egg Turners

Has your child told you about being an egg turner?! If not, ask him/her if they’ve had their turn yet. Everyone gets to help!

Reminder

All students will need a lunch from home this Friday. Due to the time we need to leave for the Flynn Theater hot lunch is NOT an option. Thank you for your help with this!

Motivation Matters!

I have been so thrilled to see our writing genre carrying over in to choice time and even at home for some students! Below are just a couple of the nonfiction books students have chosen to write independently.

Thank you!

I truly appreciate all of the kind words, pictures, flowers, and the variety of gifts for our classroom. Today we had Wow Wednesday which included using new playdoh for ‘red’ word practice, flashlights for quiet reading, and a bubble party in the sun. Tomorrow, we’ll be chewing gum and having more fun thanks to your generosity. UMS is a special place!

The Eggs have Arrived!

Today, Nurse Kelly joined us first thing in the morning to clean the eggs, talk about hand washing when being an ‘egg turner’, and setting the eggs in the incubator. Everyone is very ‘egg-cited’ (I can’t help the puns) to have our 12 guests!

We all practiced being an ‘egg turner’. The class took this job very seriously!
