More Halloween Fun!

Today during math we worked on estimations using ghosts and popcorn. We also practiced keeping data using tally marks for our jack o lantern game! During reading we read about Pinky (the first grade witch) and even watched a two minute clip based on the story 'There's a Nightmare in my Closet'. Another busy and fun day in the books!

Halloween Fun!

Thank you to everyone who contributed to our Halloween party on Friday! Students enjoyed some treats and made a black cat to use as a decoration at home. Have a fun and safe night tomorrow!

Word Study Fun!

Sorry for getting these pictures out a little after the fact. It was my class weekend so Thursday night, Friday night, and most of Saturday were devoted to that. Anyway...we had a lot of fun with Ms. White's class on Thursday during word study. We played an intense game of 'spelling battleship'!

New Science Unit

Today we kicked off our first science unit - Solids and Liquids! Students watched a short video and took notes on some science vocabulary (i.e. 'matter', 'property').

Great Math Thinking

Today, students worked on justifying their answers to addition and subtraction number stories. I was impressed with the variety of ways to solve the problems. I just wish I had grabbed my camera earlier to show all of the mathematicians at work! We will be working a lot this year on using different strategies to solve problems.

Library Visit

We had a wonderful visit to the Burnham Library yesterday! The walk was brisk (but nice) and we got to listen to stories and then browse the shelves! Thank you, Pam for having us!

Short e

Today I introduced the fifth and final short vowel sound 'e'. We will now do a lot of practice both reading and writing CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words.

Math Homework

Please note:  This week students only have one page of math homework to complete.  We realize that many families have different parties and events going on this week and coming weekend.  You will see that because there is only one side I have asked that it be returned by Friday rather than Monday.  If you still need the weekend - that is okay!

Field Trip Monday

Please remember that we will be walking to the fire station on Monday morning. Students should wear comfortable shoes and be dressed for the weather!

Community Helpers

This afternoon students were asked to work in small groups to think about the different tools different community helpers use to do their jobs. Then they created riddles using pictures as clues. The cooperation was nice to see!

Smarties for the Smarties

Today our read to self time went so well we celebrated with Smarties! Students kept their eyes and mind in their own books.

Drop Everything and Dance

Yesterday we had our first 'drop everything and dance' day at UMS! Although this short video shows us in our classroom we eventually made our way down the hallway with Ms. White's class!  I think it is fair to say that a GREAT time was had by all!

Police Visit

As a great connection to community helpers we had two Colchester police officers stop in today to talk about their jobs.

School Meeting

Today's school meeting was so much fun! Mrs. Mazza and some second grade students taught us how to say hello in different languages. Mrs. Helfrich's kindergarten kids recited a Halloween poem and then we danced to an ABC song!

Practicing 'Red' Words

This week's new 'red' word (words that must be memorized for speaking and reading) is 'like'. Today we sang a song and then made 'like' booklets.

Combinations of 10

Recently we have been working on making combinations of 10. Today, students had to explain if they had all of the combinations and how they knew. Tough work!

Change of Date

I wanted to let everyone know that our First Grade Volunteer Reading Program has had a change of start date.  To make things consistent across the classrooms we will all begin on Monday, October 24th.  I will have information out at tonight's Open House for those who have already signed up to volunteer.  If you have not yet signed up, but would like to there is still time.  Please check for a sign up sheet this evening.  Thank you for your understanding and I apologize for the confusion.
