Google Hangout

Today we did our first ‘mystery number hangout’ with first grade students from Porters Point School! Each class had a mystery number that the other class had to figure out by asking math-based ‘yes’ or ‘no’ questions (i.e. is your number odd? Is your number greater than 32?)

Biographies

Recently, we have been reading biographies and learning about the parts of a biography. This has fit nicely with some of our recent Scholastic News issues, President’s Day, and Black History month.

Guidance Today

Today students had their final lesson with Miss Lori. We learned about babies and how kids can help with babies in appropriate ways. We also learned that adults need to do most of the care-taking. This was a helpful lesson as many elementary students have young siblings at home.

100th Day Fun!

Today was a great day in first grade! From crowns to hidden pictures, visiting other classrooms, and lots of ‘trinkets’ - I think it’s safe to say we celebrated in style!

Lots of Valentine Prep

Just a reminder...if your child plans to bring valentines to school on Wednesday please make sure that there is one for each student in our class. Thank you!

Word Study Fun

Due to the snow day and a writing assessment yesterday we only had word study two times this week. Rather than give a ‘check in’ we practiced our new skills in shaving cream and sand!

Main Idea versus Details

Our learning target for reading this week is being able to identify main idea and tell key details. This can be a tricky concept for students so we will work on it for many days.

Guidance

Y

Yesterday during guidance we listened to a book called the Bare Naked Book. Although the topic of private body parts can be uncomfortable for children the class overall did a nice job learning about the medical names that a doctor would use when talking about the human body. Students learned what parts are considered private and gave examples of public places where we would not show or be shown private body parts. Please reach out to myself or Mrs. McCleary if you have any questions.

Math Game Day

Today we practiced adding and subtracting by 10 and using doubles facts! There was great math thinking going on in room 6.

Choice Time!

Today we enjoyed a fun Friday which included choice time for all!

‘Kings of -ing’

This week we practiced the -ing chunk during word study. Don’t we look royal?!
