Tom Messner at UMS

A big thank you to Tom Messner for sharing his knowledge and love of weather with all our first graders yesterday!

Rain Simulation

As we continue our study of weather today we did a simulation. Students were able to see how rain falls from the sky when it becomes heavier than the air.

Non-Fiction Research

Today students were introduced to two, kid-friendly, online, search tools (kidrex and kiddle). We are just beginning to investigate sharks (always a popular topic) as we continue to practice reading and writing informational text.

Nonfiction Reading and Writing

During our third trimester we will be focusing on elements of nonfiction reading and writing. This week we practiced reading with 'curiousity' and 'interest'.

'Super e'

We have started to learn about how a 'super e' at the end of a word can make a vowel says its' name (long vowel sound). Today we made our own 'e' wands.

DARE

Today we had our first DARE (drug abuse resistance education) lesson with Officer Mullen. We talked about using 911. Officer Mellon will be here the next three Friday afternoons.
